Wellesley PAC, thursday, May 21st 7:00-8:30 pm

Thursday, May 21, 2015
7:00 – 8:30 pm,
Wellesley Middle School Library
There will be a short meet and greet prior to the start of the meeting. No RSVP required!

Writing Effective IEPs and the Common Core
Education chiefs and governors in 48 states came together to develop the Common Core, a set of college- and career-ready standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in ELA and mathematics. The Common Core standards are designed so students are career and college ready at graduation.

What is it we really want an individual student to know and be able to do? With the implementation of the Common Core, parents can easily become confused.  How can we ensure that at the end of a year, we will know if the child has made the progress we targeted?  The workshop will provide a framework for understanding how various parts of the IEP fit together and will focus on the development of meaningful and measurable IEP goals and objectives.

Sprague PTO Update

Dear Sprague Community,

We made it! April vacation! Hard to believe a mere two months ago we were herniating ourselves as we threw snow over seven foot snow piles. Enjoy the vacation, you earned it!

Thank-you Jacqie Stathis for donating your time to lead the social spin event on Monday. Also, thank-you to everyone who donated play ground equipment through the event. Now that we have fought back the snow demons to recover our playground, the equipment will be put to good use.

Warm Regards,

Matthew McKay

Sprague PTO Update

Dear Sprague Community,

On this long weekend I find my thoughts centered on transformation. Signs of (dare I say) Spring are popping up as the snow rapidly melts away, although maybe not fast enough for some of us. The Sprague PTO transforms from year to year, and this year has been no exception. At the PTO board meeting on Tuesday we will update members on a few of the transformations occurring, and begin to consider how the PTO likely transforms next year. On Thursday evening the fifth grade basketball game is scheduled, a mile marker along the path of our children as they move from elementary to middle school, opening up new horizons and challenges.

At Town Meeting on Tuesday the school budget was approved. Dr. Lussier did a masterful job presenting the rising costs of level services, strategic investments, and critical improvements. In the approved budget is a pilot program for inclusion of a second language in the K through grade 2 classrooms next year. Assuming all goes well, the program would expand the following year to include grades 3 through 5. Two schools will participate in the pilot program, which are Sprague and Hardy. Ms. Snyder has been hard at work determining how the additional requirement will fit into the week. We should feel very fortunate Sprague was included and we have Ms. Snyder's expertise in administering a second language curriculum.

Thank you for the continuing support.

Warm Regards,
Matthew McKay

SPRING PARTY 2015

Wellesley GREEN Schools

April Green Focus – Earth Month
April is not only awesome as plants and trees start to bud...but also because it is Earth Month.
Here are a few simple things you can do to celebrate the planet this month:
Go paperless or double-sided – avoid printing if you don’t have to as most of us have our devices handy anyway or use both sides of paper when printing or copying and save some trees! And unsubscribe to catalogues using www.catalogchoice.org or www.paperkarma.com.
BYOB – Bags and Bottles, that is. Use your reusable grocery bags instead of the store’s disposable plastic bags and avoid using disposable water bottles whenever possible...it adds up quickly to a better environment!
Plant a tree – a single tree has a number of benefits beyond just its beauty and shade value as it also has the ability to act as an air filter for carbon dioxide and provide a supply of enough oxygen for two people!
Walk or bike if you can - leave the car at home and walk or bike to do that errand. Or carpool with some neighbors or friends to school or activities. And definitely turn off your engine whenever possible.
Small changes can make a big difference! For more information go to www.wellesleygreenschools.com.
