Wellesley Green Schools  - Green Tip for May

With spring like weather finally here, consider walking, biking, scootering or other clean energy transportation methods such as carpooling or taking the bus. Emissions from cars are one of the main sources of ozone-causing pollutants, accounting for almost half of our air pollution.

Let’s Lower Our Carbon Emission and Start Healthy Lifetime Habits Today.

7th Annual Wellesley-Weston PMC Kids Bike Ride
Sunday, June 2, 2013
8:30 am – 11:30 am
Babson College, Wellesley

We need you and your friends to help cure cancer by joining this year’s ride!  Last year we raised $55,000 for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and this year we intend to raise even more.  Come be a part of this great community effort!
Route Options:
·        Off Road Challenge (ages 9-13):  New for this year!  1 ½ mile loop on Babson’s campus, including a long stretch on a smooth, hard-packed dirt road (mountain/hybrid bike required).  Challenge yourself by riding lots of times around!
·        Campus Adventure (ages 6-10):  1 ¼ mile loop on Babson’s campus.  Ride it as many times as you want!
·        Tot Lot:  Fun-filled obstacle course and other activities for little bikers
·        Virtual Rider:  Can’t join us on Ride Day?  You can still fundraise by registering as a virtual rider. You'll get your PMC shirt and goody bag and enjoy knowing your participation has made a real difference.

Raise Money and Win Prizes!  The Kids Ride is all about raising money for Dana Farber.  Every rider has a fundraising minimum of $25, although we strongly encourage you to pursue our suggested fundraising goals ($50 for Tot Lot, $75 for 6-8 years old, $125 for ages 9 and up).  Once you meet your minimum, lots of great things happen -- you receive a raffle ticket to win an iPad and you get a surprise gift on ride day.  And, if you raise $250 or more, you’ll also receive special recognition and a drawstring bag as one of our Heavy Hitter fundraisers.

Register online. Go to www.kids.pmc.org to register for the ride.  We need adults and teens 14+ to volunteer, so ask your family members to sign up too!  Details on volunteer opportunities are available on the website.

Following the success of Wellesley’s POWER to CHOOSE renewable energy campaign, Wellesley's Sustainable Energy Committee, Wellesley’s Municipal Light Plant and National Grid are launching POWER to $AVE - Wellesley's Energy Savings Program.

This initiative encourages residents to get a no-cost energy assessment and then accomplish at least some of the recommendations from the assessment.

A home energy assessment evaluates a home’s energy usage and provides recommendations on how to improve its efficiency, including estimated payback periods if recommendations are followed. Doing so will reduce the carbon footprint in that home and our town, as well as save on energy bills.

No-cost equipment and attractive incentives and rebates may be available.

This is an ideal opportunity to educate Wellesley children to be responsible citizens and to demonstrate to them that we care about the world we are leaving to them.

Look for an information card with this logo on it coming home in K-5 backpacks and being distributed by WMS grade 6 Green Ambassadors.

For more details, simply, call the MLP at 781.235.7600 or visit WellesleyPowerToSave.com.

Wellesley's reusable area opens next month!

If you received a new electronic device for the holidays or a birthday, what do you plan to do with the old one? The Wellesley Recycling and Disposal Facility (the “Dump”) happily takes all old electronics, computer and cellphones for recycling. Or you can use an on-line buy back program such as locally owned Gazelle; you supply information online about your gadget, they refurbish and resell it, taking a small fee for the service. Or you can try to sell it through Ebay or Craig’s list. Whatever you do, don’t throw it in the trash. The toxins inside your old electronics don’t belong in a landfill, so do the right thing and recycle it properly.

What's your green play of the day?

Wellesley United Soccer Club Spring 2013 Kindergarten Soccer Program will shift back to the Wednesday afternoon Kinder Kick format for the 2013 spring season. Due to field constraints in the spring, the Kindergartners will play on Wednesdays as they had done prior to last year, rather than on Saturday mornings like they did last fall. In the Fall, we will continue to offer the Saturday morning Kindergarten Program as we did last year.

In keeping with our past Kinder Kick Program, the sessions will be held at each elementary school on Wednesdays, 1-1:45pm and will run 6 weeks, April 24 – May 29. School Coordinators and Volunteer parent coaches are needed so sign up when you register your child. Our new Director of Coaching will provide practice plans for every session and will review the practice plans with coaches prior to each session.

Registration is now open, sign up before Feb. 15th! For more info and to register go to our website www.wellesleysoccer.org

Community Event featuring Award Winning Author, Sailor, and Teacher - Neal Petersen - Sat., Jan 26th 10-11AM

A Path in The Woods Foundation & Thrive Wellesley
Present a Special Community Event with Neal Petersen
In Life, There are No Barriers, Only Solutions

Saturday January 26, 2013 – 10:00AM-11:00AM

Katherine L. Babson, Jr. Auditorium
Wellesley High School - 50 Rice Street, Wellesley, MA

A book signing and sharing of ideas will take place after
Neal’s talk in the Wilbury Crockett Library

Neal will share his life lessons and story of hope & resiliency, including:
☼ The importance of realizing goals through perseverance and passion.
☼ Choosing conquest over adversity, never give up!
☼ The power of positive attitude and how if affects one’s performance.
☼ With choices there are consequences – choose wisely.
☼ Change – adapt to wind shifts and stormy seas by knowing when to alter course.

Neal Petersen overcame a childhood disability, poverty and apartheid to become the first sailor of African descent to complete the world’s premier solo sailing event.  Petersen sailed for 195 days to complete the 27,000-mile “Around Alone,” the longest race for individuals in any sport, in 1999. His 2004 autobiography, “Journey of a Hope Merchant: From Apartheid to the Elite World of Solo Yacht Racing,” won the National Outdoor Book Award in 2005. The book includes a harrowing account of his passage around South America’s Cape Horn. Petersen’s 1994 book, “No Barriers,” describes how he built a yacht and sailed it from South Africa to Europe using a sextant rather than a compass. A PBS documentary about Petersen is also titled “No Barriers.” Petersen’s No Barriers Education Foundation, based in Charleston, S.C., works with elementary schools to teach children “to believe in themselves,” set goals, and understand that education can help dreams come true.

Thrive Wellesley’s mission is to engage parents, students, community, business and religious leaders, senior citizens and others in the Wellesley community to create the opportunities and culture that enable every child to develop their innate gifts and thrive in life. We invite everyone in our community to bring his/her ideas to the discussions as we move beyond myths, build on Wellesley’s strengths, and put all our youth on a path to lifetime well being. This year we hope to expand opportunities for every student in sports programs and creative-arts activities.

What's Happening Around Town? Week of Nov. 11th

The Wellesley Parent Advisory Council Presents:

Executive Functioning:
The What's, Where's, and How's of It

Tuesday, November 13th

7-9pm
Wellesley Middle School Library

Executive Functioning (or EF for short) seems to be the new buzzwords. We know these skills are important, but not necessarily how they impact a child's growth and development.

Melissa Rubin and Marjorie Albin, learning specialists and co-founders of The Student First, will talk with us about what Executive Functioning is, how to recognize EF deficits, and what we can do to help develop these vital skills in our children.

Wellesley Green Schools Monthly Tip

Wondering where to start or what to do next in your family's effort to be "greener"?

Sustainable Wellesley is offering an easy checklist to enable you to save energy, money and enlighten yourself a bit.

After reading hundreds of hints and tips, trying many of them (even the wacky ones), surveying hundreds of members, and thinking a lot about what really makes a difference, they have created a set of checklists with the actions they found to be the most powerful and effective in reducing our impact on the environment.

There are three checklists of increasing effort and impact:  SaplingTree, and Redwood, and a separate one for the kids. Basically, there is something there for everyone.

To get started, simply go to checklists on SustainableWellesley.com.

Happy Holidays,
