Got any old bikes lying around that you need
to get rid of? Kenyon Alexander, a junior at Wellesley
High School and a member of Boy Scout
Troop 185 in Wellesley ,
is holding a used bike drive this spring for his Eagle Scout Project. The drive
is affiliated with Roll it Forward, a Boston-based program that collects,
repairs, and distributes bikes to low-income Boston residents who might not otherwise have
access to a bike. By distributing bicycles and providing proper bike
safety education, the Roll it Forward program promotes a healthier lifestyle of
increased physical activity and fewer trips by car. The bikes from the
program serve as a family’s first step in adopting cycling as an
ongoing activity for health and convenience. The goal of Kenyon’s Eagle project
is to collect 30 bikes for Roll it Forward over the course of three separate
drives.
Any kind of bike is good, big or small, as
long as it is usable—any bikes that are trashed, rusted out, seized up, or
otherwise incapacitated are of no use to the program. However, the drive will
happily accept high-quality bikes that need a basic repair or tune-up. Anyone
who is considering donating should visit the Roll it Forward website at www.bostonbikes.org/programs/roll-it-forward
for more information.
There will be a single drive at the Wellesley
Recycling and Disposal Facility on Saturday, June 15th from 9:00 AM
until closing time at 4:45 PM. If you have any further questions, please
contact Kenyon at 339-222-0090 or email 185bikedrive@gmail.com. We hope to see you there!

From Wellesley Green Schools
More stuff is thrown away at schools during June than any other time of the year. This contributes to the already full landfills across our state, and country. Wellesley Schools are working to prevent school’s single biggest waste day.
During the last days of school, talk to your students about redirecting as much of their locker and school materials as possible to their home or school’s supply stock, a local charity, and recycle to keep it out of a landfill.
To encourage them to create the least amount of trash simply:
Take home items that they (or someone in your household) can use again next year (pencils, pens, dictionaries, books, binders, notebooks, etc.)
Put papers that they are finished with in the blue recycling bins at school.
Items they don’t think they (or someone in your household) will use again, bring to reusable area at the RDF or share with a local charity for others to use.
Thanks and happy summer!
